3.7.DB2/400って何？

System38から、仕事をされている方にとって、V3から、何やらDB2/400というものが目に付きませんか。実はこれ、NEWS 3X/400の1994年12月号に登場していました。このころ、次に来るV3の話題が多く、その中に含まれていました。また、"INSIDE THE AS/400"でも、このDB2/400について説明があります。以下は、抜粋です。

The AS/400's integrated relational database now has a name: It is called DB2 for OS/400. Every System/38 and every AS/400 since the very beginning has had a relational database. Previously, this database never had a name, so why now ?

For one thing, many AS/400 customers didn't know they had a database, because the integrated structure of AS/400 supports internal management of the database. Some Surveys showed that as many as 40 percent of our customers were unaware that they had a database and were using it in their database. That is both good news and bad news.

The good news is just use it. They certainly don't have anyone identified in their business who has the role of a database administrator, unlike many other database that require database managers.

The bad news is that many of our customers thought someday they would have to add a database to their AS/400. All modern computers, even PCs, have relational database, which the user purchase separately and integrates into the system. So surely, the AS/400 should have a relational database. Again, surveys have shown that many AS/400 customers planned to buy a database in the near future.

というわけで、あくまでAS/400のマーケティング上の必要性から、名前を付けたようです。これがないとAS/400にdatabase機能が初めからあることに気づかないユーザーがいるようです。まあ、言われてみると、他機種からの移行をしてきた人にとって、DDSで作るファイルがリレーショナルデータベースとなっていますといっても分からないかもしれない。それから、DB2製品ファミリーとして、MVSからOS2まで統一的なnamingとなり、また付加された機能でサーバーとしてのAS/400の地位も確立しようとしたようです。
このTopicのボタンもDBをやめてDB2/400にしよう。
